Well-being in the workplace
Wellbeing in the workplace is in the news, with the Boorman review of the NHS being reported widely. A recent report commissioned by PruHealth shows that approximately 50% large (250+) employers offer free or discounted gym membership, flu jabs, private health insurance and access to counselling BUT only some 10% SMEs offer private health insurance.
One approach to promoting workplace wellbeing may be to emphasise the need to take breaks from work to increase productivity. A recent survey in HR magazine shows that more than half (55%) of employees do not take a full lunch break and only 29% leave the office for lunch every day.
The emphasis in the workplace is shifting beyond health and safety and the confines of Occupational Health into mental health and overall wellbeing. NHS Greenwich recognises the need to engage with employers, large and small and has offered a venue for the forthcoming Talk the Walk - a free network meeting to share ideas on how to enhance wellbeing in the workplace.
